Gumbo Cookoff winners from PHS Booster's Club announced

PONCHATOULA -- The full slate of winners In the Ponchatoula High School Booster's Club Sixth Annual Gumbo Cookoff has been announced.

The grand champion team was  the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival Board with Donald Lanier as team captain. He was assisted by Mike St. Arnaud and Louisiana Strawberry Queen Heather Gonzales.

 Seafood Division

  • First place: Strawberry Festival Board.
  •  Second place: Ponchatoula Jaycees with Brandon Miller as captain, assisted by Brad and Shelly Matherne and Marcia Ordogne.
  • Third place: Florida Parishes Bank with Lester Nicosia as captain assisted by Brian Steib.

Chicken/Fowl & Sausage Division

  • First place: Strawberry Festival Board.
  •  Second place: Gumbo Gurouxs with Andy Duvic as captain assisted by Joey Haley, Henry Jacobs, Mike Laylle.
  • Third place: CCA's Chicken & Sausage Gumbo with Scott Allen as captain assisted by Ed Swindell.

The People's Choice Award went to Bridgette Landry and "B's" seafood gumbo.

Best decorated booth was Sheriff Daniel Edwards and Chief Deputy Dennis Pevey's "Ya Ya Paradis Gumbo" with palm trees, sand and pineapples.

Participants included:

  • The Ponchatoula Lion's Club "Lion's Pride" chicken & sausage Gumbo; Carter Plantation's Gary Fonseca serving oyster, shrimp and blue crab gumbo and also duck and andouille gumbo; Jeff and Bryce Mckinney (whom this event was created for six years ago)  "Cooking for Hope" chicken and sausage gumbo; last year's Grand Champion Shannon Joiner's "Firehouse Smoked-up" chicken and sausage gumbo; Ponchatoula City Councilman Braville Leblanc and Kenny Decareaux's "Make Doux Seafood & Chicken and Sausage Gumbo."

Also, Autism Awareness "Award Winning" seafood gumbo by Miles Foy; VNM Supply's "Vinny's Seafood & Chicken and Andouille Gumbo"; "LeFleur De Gumbo! Chicken and Andouille Gumbo" by Mel Ingraffia Howes and family;  "Haylee's Swamp Stew" by Edward and Wanda Dimaggio; The Beacon Lounge's "Manchac Gumbo" by Marvin Starkey and Mike Matte; O'Donnell's Restaurant's Phil O'Donnell's Seafood Gumbo; Ponchatoula Rotary Club's "Rotary Gumbo"; "Mike's Best Chicken & Sausage Gumbo" by Mike Biglar and Larry Byers; Bob Griffin's "Don't Be Crabby Seafood Gumbo"; Chuck's Sports Cards Seafood and Chicken & Sausage Gumbo with Rusty Savoy and brothers; and A & B's Chicken and Andouille Gumbo by Andy Breaux and Jonathan Damiens.      

Marcel Damiens Sr., Booster Club president said money raised from the gumbo goes to the club's Injured Players Fund.  Damiens said money from the fund has gone to help injured players in other areas of the state as well as for Ponchatoula athletes.

He said this year's event was well attended, and it seems to be growing each year. It is also  gaining the support of the community, he said.

Judges this year were Don Dubuc, WWL Radio 870 AM/105.3 FM talk show and outdoor show host and Saints color analyst Hokie Gajan.

Dubuc hosts the Outdoor Show, a fishing and hunting show, from 5-7 a.m. each Saturday.
