As Creative Minds Writers Group puts the finishing touches on its Eighth Annual Berries, Bridges and Books Writers Conference, the reading public is invited to its “Meet the Authors” event the evening before.

Friday, July 14, 2017, at 6 p.m., authors registered for the conference will have books and be ready to visit with the public one-on-one at the Art Station, 146 West Oak Street in Ponchatoula. Everyone is welcome and there is no charge for this event.

There is still time to pre-register for the next day’s conference itself meeting in the Ponchatoula Community Center from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Saturday, July 15.

Included in the $45 registration fee are a continental breakfast, beverages all day, full hot meal for lunch plus dessert during afternoon break. (Food catered by local Evon Smith’s Cayenne Catering.)

The conference is for anyone interested in writing, whether already published, hoping to be published or just having a love for reading and writing.

Two of the general sessions are in honor of beloved members lost during this past year: Katie Wainwright and Helen Lott Latino: “What the Library Has to Offer Writers” will be presented by Chris Smith, long-time Jefferson Parish Librarian Adult Coordinator, and “The History of Film Making in South Louisiana” by Linda Thurman, author of “Hollywood South: Glamor, Gumbo and Greed”. Thurman has worked around the world in the entertainment field including Norma Lear Productions and HBO, “Fried Green Tomatoes”, “Sweet Dreams” and “The Hitcher” – just to give an idea.

The third general session is on “Self-Publishing” by award-winning novelist Cherie Dastague Coen.

An elevator is available for breakout sessions upstairs where topics offered are Romance, Steampunk to Fantasy to Sci-Fi: How to Turn the Improbable and the Fantastic into Reality, Inspiration, Religious, Children’s, Suspense/Mystery, Illustrating and Writers, Short Stories and Poetry.

Breakout speakers include more well-known names in the writing field: Dawn Chartier, Laura Ewald, Teena Myers, Kathleen Schrenk, Colleen Mooney, Michael Verret, Reine Dugas Bouton and Mary Emma Dutreix Pierson.

The conference attracts attendees from Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
