DENHAM SPRINGS – Deputies arrested four people for stealing metal grates from the Crystal Lakes Subdivision after a patrol deputy spotted a “low riding” minivan on Lockhart Road Thursday night, according to Chief Deputy Jason Ard of the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The 1995 Dodge minivan appeared to be low in the rear and the van’s one headlight was pointed into the trees, so a deputy pulled over the vehicle around 9 p.m. Once stopped, the deputy discovered six metal storm grates weighing approximately 250 pounds each. These metal grates are valued at $300 each or a scrap value of $28 each.
The two men in the vehicle also were covered with mud and rust stains that matched the color of the grates.
The Crystal Lakes Subdivision has had about $12,000 in storm grates stolen since December 2010, and deputies are investigating whether these alleged thieves are involved in the other crimes.
The following people were arrested and booked into the Livingston Parish Detention in Livingston Center on one count each of felony theft on Thursday night. All four remain in jail in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
