Woman's brutal beating gets Hammond man a 15-year sentence

Amite- On January 23, 2012, Rasha Walker, 31, of 1001 M.C. Morre Road, Hammond, LA, was sentenced to 15 years with the Department of Corrections after pleading no contest to Aggravated Second Degree Battery, said District Attorney Scott M. Perrilloux.

Judge Ernest G. Drake handed down the sentence, and Assistant District Attorney Britain Sledge handled the prosecution.

The victim reported that she and Walker were inside her Hammond home when Walker attacked her. While in the hospital, the victim told police that the defendant began choking her, he then used a cast iron skillet to beat her, breaking it in the process. Walker also used a metal toilet paper stand in the attack. The assault resulted in multiple fractures to her face, a large cut to the back of her head, requiring stitches, and a large cut inside her mouth, also requiring stitches. She explained that he repeatedly demanded money and threatened to kill her. Because the victim had no money, Walker took the rings from her fingers and fled the scene.

Although she knew her attacker, the victim did not know the defendant’s real name. However, an investigation by the Hammond Police Department led officers to Walker, who was later identified by the woman in a photo line-up.

Walker must serve his sentence without benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence, said Perrilloux.
